You look to your calendar and discover that Wednesday is National Aboriginal Day.

Uh oh, what can you do this late in the year to ensure students continue to learn about the cultures that make Canada?

BOOKS!

The first peoples to come to the land we call Canada were the Native Canadians 15000 years ago (or more). Experts say that they crossed the Bering Strait during the Ice Age.

Today the Native Populations of Canada are divided into many groups, but generally can be divided into three main groups:
1. First Nations
2. Inuit
3. Metis

As a whole, they should be referred to as Aboriginal.

Only One province (Saskatchewan) requires aboriginal content in all grades and most subjects, but many make efforts to ensure students learn about aboriginal contributions to Canada (The Prairies and BC especially).

Today, teachers have many options at their disposal to bring aboriginal cultures into the classroom regardless of whether it is mandated by their province or board.

I believe every student deserves to see themselves represented in the books their teacher reads in class.

Therefore, when I was teaching in Manitoba I began my collection of books which showed characters who looked like my students.

Below is a picture of the books from my collection at home today:

Granny's Giant Bannock
Lark and his Grandmother do not speak the same language, but she still wants to bake him some Bannock while she visits him in Winnipeg. So with his minimal Cree and her minimal Engish, he manages to figure out what she's asking him to buy to bake for him, or so he thinks. (This is a favourite of my daughter Helen, she loves Bannock, and misses it from when we lived in Saskatchewan)

Nanabasho Series
Until coming to make this list, I didn't realize how many books in this series were discontinued. It has been almost ten years since I bought them.
Nanabosho is a friend and trickster and has different adventures in each book.

How Summer Came to Canada
This was first read to me in the 80's at school. It's the story of How Summer and Winter came to be. Based on Micmac legends from the region of Canada I'm from. Summer persuades Winter to let her wake up the world while he goes back North to rest for half the year.

A Boy Called Slow
The story of a boy who desperately wants to be given a name likes his father. He grows up to be named Sitting Bull.

Stu Bear Goes on A Mission Visit
I'm not actually sure where or how I acquired this book. And I can't find a link to it on Amazon for you, but it might be available in libraries! In this book, Stu Bear goes on a Mission to inner-city Winnipeg.

Sootface
Sootface is treated poorly by her sisters, much like Cinderella was treated poorly by her step sisters. You could easily use this book in class and compare via a Venn diagram to Cinderella, there really are that many similarities.

The Rough-Face Girl
Honestly, this is basically the exact same story as Sootface! So check out both and pick your favourite, or do another Venn diagram.

Mikissuk's Secret
This book takes place in Nunavut. Mikissuk and her brother have always been very close, but now he is going off on the dogsled to hunt, and she wants to join him but she is too young.

Mwakwa Talks to the Loon
A hunter can talk to animals, but when he becomes too proud of himself, he loses his ability, and the people become hungry.

Are these all the books you could read on National Aboriginal Day?
Definitely Not!

But I implore you to add some to your collection if you haven't already.
In the comments below, please share your favourite books to read to your class with a Native Canadian theme/author/etc
I realized this lovely teacher may not be ALONE in not knowing how to easily find out, so I made you this AWESOME graphic to help you out. I hope it answers any concerns!

Of course!

I love using poetry, don't you?

Of course you do, it's awesome.

You'd have to be a Beast to not see the benefits, lol.

Ok, not a beast, but maybe you just haven't found the right way to use poetry for YOUR classroom just yet.

How Can I use Poetry in my Class?

There are more ways to use poetry in a classroom than I can mention in one simple article, but I will share some of my favourites with you.

1. During Circle Time have a poem or twenty on your chart stand that your class reads together over the course of the year. Throughout the course of the year, change up how you interact with your poems. I recommend laminating so they can be reused all year, and brought out again next year with a new group.

Suggestions for use:

-Teacher Read Aloud (with pointer)

-Students read along with the teacher

-Teacher Reads the line and pauses at the rhyme and prompts students to complete

-Students circle sight words (see picture)

-Students circle rhyming words

-Students read alone

-Students locate the random line the teacher quotes

2. Use as part of Word family or Sight Word studies- Write together a poem using as many words as they can from that week's word family or the most recent sight words.

3. On Posters around the Room and to Remember Rules. Take a picture of your kiddos standing how they are supposed to and put it up by the door. You can do similar things for other rules too! Poetry is a great way to remember rules. A rule at my house is, "You get what you get, and you don't get upset." Helen always remembers the rule because as soon as a start saying the short rhyme she can easily remember what comes next.

5. Do you have a Christmas Concert? You could sing a song, or you could have the kids recite a rhythmic poem, complete wth drums. It's really up to you! You could introduce a few poems in November and go over them with the kids and have them vote on their favourite to share with their families at the concert. See More of my Christmas Songs
6. As books to read! (includes affiliate link) After all, we need to expose our kids to a variety of genres, why not poetry? Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on! Run into the library or bookstore and try a few different authors until you find one whose style you like.

Recently I introduced my daughter to the works of Sheree Fitch. Our first poem by her was the classic Mabel Murple. Check out Helen's review below:

What if there was a purple planet with purple people on it? Sheree Fitch answers this question with a zany tongue-twister of a poem featuring Mabel Murple, a daredevil who rides a purple motorbike through purple puddles, skis on purple snow, and on her pancakes pours maple syrup. With a rich and vivid purple palette, Sydney Smith's brand-new illustrations reflect the wild joy in this classic poem. Originally published in 1995, Mabel Murple won the Ann Connor Brimer award for children's literature.

You do?

Me too!

Yay!

Great minds think alike, right?

Are there any on right now?

I'm so glad you asked!

Yes!

How do I find resources by participating stores?

Click on THIS link to TpT!

Or you can type in #happyeasterdeals in the TpT search bar, but why do that when I've already done it for you? :)

How can I find just the resources Reading with Mrs. D has up?

I have both resources written up below for you so you can click on the hyperlinks there, or you can click on THIS link to the Reading With Mrs. D Store.

Can I put my products up too?

If you're a TPT seller you can join the Facebook Group Wallflower TpT Think Tank.

After you join, find the post about this sale and follow the rules.

As ALWAYS in a seller hosted TPT sale, you mark ONLY two resources down, and you must help to promote the sale.

EASY PEASY!

What Resources did you mark down Desiree?

I picked my 20 Spring Scrambled Sentences and my Letter Reversals Dice!

I thought about the Easter Sentences instead, but I figured by now you have this week planned, lol.

1. Spring Scrambled Sentences are part of a HUGE growing bundle I have been working on this year.

I started with Halloween, and have made a set for almost every holiday and every season since then.

They vary in length (the number of sentences included) so this is reflected in their individual prices.

For example, The Spring set has TWENTY sentences. Each coordinating recording sheet has space for FOUR of these sentences, so you could easily use FOUR sentences a week for FIVE weeks!

I have also included a generic recording page so YOU can choose which four sentences to use any given week.

Here's a look for you:

Each sentence is five or six words long. I try to vary the sentences so they start with different words, and there is at least one questioning sentence in each pack.

The cards should be cut up and laminated for durability so students can shuffle them around to build a sentence that makes sense. Most sets each sentence can only make one good sentence, but there are a few sets where two words could be reversed.

There are THREE recording sheet options in this set. COLOUR, B&W and a generic numbers only version.

2. Letter Reversals Dice are part of my HUGE Letter Reversals Bundle.

So many early years students struggle with one or more set of easily confused letters.

This set (and ALL the sets) includes the following common reversals:

b/d/p/q/g (all possible pairs)

u/n/h/y (all possible pairs)

M/W m/w

s/z

f/t

Don't see the set of letters you were hoping for, or have an unusual confusion in your class? I can make you a Custom Set!

The Dice are very easy to use once you've taken the time to build the cubes (May I suggest it's a great job for a parent volunteer?) Just laminate, cut out and fold in place. I sealed mine with packing tape, which I also suggest for you.

To use, give the student the die with the two letters they are working on TODAY and the coordinating worksheet. Students roll the die, and then use the blue background to help them orient the die before recording the letter they rolled on their page.

EASY PEASY!

Here's a look for you:

Each die has the letters written on primary lines, with a blue rectangle behind the bottom section to help students orient the top and bottom of each letter. This is especially helpful when orienting tall or long letters.

The recording page has the letters again with primary lines.

Students will simply record the letters they record UNDER the matching letter.

It is up to YOU as the teacher if they will copy the letter or make a tally.

Perhaps the first time they play they can make a tally, and the second time they might copy the letters?

When I was growing up in the 90's, Canadian TV had a series of historical minutes ("Heritage Minutes") shared during commercials. Each minute shared a vital part of Canadian History. Ask any kid who grew up in the era to name even one, and they'd name at least ten. They still air I believe, but nowhere as frequently as before.

They taught us about the Halifax Explosion, Laura Secord, the Bluenose, Avro Arrow, Jackie Robinson and so many other things.

And. we can all quote them.
At any party if someone says, "Doctor, I smell burnt toast," you'll be sure to find people making a mental list of these iconic commercials. I think some of us learned more Canadian history from these commercials than we did in school.

I completely believe it was a combination of the ever present Heritage Minutes and my grandfather's stories that made me LOVE history. His stories made my childhood better and memorable. He often used Heritage Minutes as a jumping off point to teach my sister, cousins, and I a bit of either Canadian or family history. I am a better person because of this.

And every single one ended by saying: "A part of our Heritage".

Did you Know the collection continues to grow?
It's hard to believe they started with 13 short films in 1991 (I was eleven), expanded to more than 70 and now there are more than 85! Most are available online.

The Most recent was released THIS year.

While I now lean towards teaching Elementary school, I used to think I'd teach high school History, and I thought it would be neat to use these videos in the classroom.

Have you used these in the classroom?

Historica Canada (who owns and creates the films) has a series of lesson plans available for use. There are lessons for Primary to senior years, with only one labelled appropriate for the primary years, but plenty of options the older your students are. Please search around until you find what you are looking for.

I'd like to match up a few books suitable for younger grades with a few of my favourite heritage minutes.

FROM THE PUBLISHER (this book is new to me, I haven't had a chance to read it yet!)
Pamela Pollock is a small fish that lives in Nova Scotia. She gets caught in a current and swept away to a place she has never been, where the water is warm, and the fish don't look familiar, and aren't friendly. She wants desperately to go home but doesn't know how until she sees a boat that looks familiar. The Bluenose. Pamela is certain if she stays close to the Bluenose she will find her way home.
Big Project
Every year I like to try and do a big project with my kids at the end of the year.
Some years, this is writing a class book, and this is always a favourite!
But a few years I did a recycling project instead.
It's particularly awesome if you like doing STEM activities.

Recycling Challenge
This could be just as easily an Earth Day Challenge, so since it's in just over two weeks, I thought now would be a good time to share it to help with your planning!

I challenge each student to create something new from something old, and present it to the class.

As you can see, I was presented with a Sponge-bob Toy, a desk Organizer, an Airplane, a bank, two robots, three cars, a bus, and more! (a train! Which was a bunch of empty tissue boxes tied together with yarn)

Caine's Arcade

The reason I'm showing you this now is because of "Caine's Arcade". Did you watch the original video?

The Original:

Then five months later there was a challenge being made that I would love to do in my imaginary classroom. Since I can't actually do it :(, I want to pass the knowledge onto you in hopes that you will do it with yours!

Now:

If I were doing this challenge:

I'd maybe as a class or grade level design and create a maze for the fall/harvest festival

Or

Have groups design flea circuses

Or
Have them make a village
Or

Do my original project, but start with showing them parts of the original video as inspiration

Or

Have each student make an arcade game

Or

?

To be honest, when my husband and I moved a few years ago to make room for baby, I really REALLY wanted to keep about 8 of the big moving boxes to bring to his sister's house when we went visiting so I could make a castle/fort for her two kids. I could see it perfectly in my head. But we had nowhere to store it, and with a newborn there is no way I would have had time to construct it.

What would you make?

What would you hope they'd make?

Would you guide them towards projects?

Would you brainstorm as a class first and assign each idea to a student or group of students?

Or Would you have parents sign up for group leaders due to the potential size of these projects?

Would you leave it ALL to their imagination?

What books could we tie into this for Language Arts?

There is so much to consider!!

See more information and join the challenge here.

Am I Special?
Of course I am!

Are you looking for a new addition to your Character Education Program?
My sister-in-law is a wonderful mom to two adorable and very young boys and one very adorable daughter (did I mention adorable?)

Today on Facebook she posted a link to this Sesame Street video of Will.i.am singing with the gang. I clicked on her link to see what my nephews are obsessed with now, and thought it was awesome!

I can imagine playing it on the first day of school or as part of a character education program to discuss how special we all are.

So many possibilities!

If you're interested here's the video:
(originally published 2012)

I've never loved teaching Math, which is probably (maybe?) why I spend so much time trying to make it FUN.

My grade 3 class had to learn about 3D shapes, and we did a big unit on this. I wish I still had my plans, but I do have pictures from three of the lessons I did with my kiddos.

Charts
This picture shows three of the charts we made for an introductory lesson. The kiddos had to look through magazines to find objects that were each of the pictured 3D shapes. First we brainstormed a few ideas like a Teepee and an Ice cream cone for the cone. As you can see, most of the examples they found were rectangular prisms, and NONE were cones. I know at least one magazine had a cone in it, but no one found it.
Build It!
Here they are using small bits of clay and cut up straws to build their own shapes. Many started out by simply making 2D shapes, but with encouragement they were able to expand. Pictured is their favourite shape, which meant a teachable moment: A house is made up of what two 3D shapes? This isn't the best example, but you get the idea right?

Memory
And here is a game. We played A LOT of math games in my room. This one has the kids playing a game of memory trying to find two matching cards. If they can name it, they get to keep the pair, if they can't, their partner gets to try.

I wish I could take credit for all of these ideas, but my school mandated that all classes at my grade level use Hands-On Mathematics by Portage and Main Press. I liked the program because you couldn't miss any curriculum outcomes, but at the same time there wasn't much room for originality.

I'm busy this week going through my files and searching online for a variety of posters to print for my classroom this year.

One thing I've found a lot of copies of but none I love, is one for the Five Fingers Rules.

So instead of settling, I made my own. Like all the posters I'm printing, I printed it on photo paper for durability. I used to have posters on white paper, but they get ratty, ripped and dirty, hopefully printing on photo paper will help!

My favourite author since I was a little girl has been Robert Munsch.

Robert Munsch actually visited my school when I was about 8 years old. It was our book challenge month, and every year a bunch of authors visited the school, and every grade got to meet at least one of them. Mr. Munsch was definitely my favourite! He read to us a couple of his books. I believe he read The Paper Bag Princess and Mud Puddle? I'm not even sure anymore since I've read them all a million times. EACH.

Helen Reviewing The Paper Bag Princess

We have QUITE a few of his books on our shelves, some survived my childhood and sharing them with my two younger sisters, but some are new copies replacing well loved books. Plus, there are SO many NEW books that hadn't even been written yet in the 80's! (I know, I'm admitting how old I am, lol)

My daughter of course loves these books too, and so for her THIRD review for Reading With Mrs. D, we chose the empowering Paper Bag Princess. If you haven't read this yet, you absolutely HAVE too.

So which is the BEST book by Robert Munsch?
Like all questions like this, the answer is different for ALL of us.

But, I'd like to share with you the Favourite Books in our House

1. The Paper Bag Princess
Obviously it's one of the best! This fiery princess is headed to save her prince and be the hero. When he tries to make her change, she doesn't defer to his wishes, she tells him off. Love it! It's a great lesson in female power. To my daughter she doesn't quite get THAT lesson from the book yet. She notices that Prince Ronald is being MEAN to Princess Elizabeth in his refusal to be saved. To my daughter, this is a lesson in bullying.

2. Love You Forever
The Story BEHIND this story is one of the saddest for a parent, and yet it's a forever favourite.
Now, there is a song repeated MANY times in this book, so I HIGHLY recommend visiting the website and listening to Robert Munsch read this book so you get the tune perfect. My daughter can sing this short song easily, so can you. This book teaches you that no matter what, and no matter how old you are, your parents will always ALWAYS love you.

3. Angela's Airplane
Back in the days before increased airport security, it was entirely possible to wander around the airport and make your way accidentally onto the tarmac or the wrong plane. In this book, Angela has a bit of a problem with NOT pushing buttons, as in, she Can NOT resist pressing buttons, and ends up accidentally flying an airplane. It's an exciting book as you hope that she manages to land the plane safely and get back to her dad.

4. Stephanies Ponytail
This book wasn't released until I was a teenager, but who can't relate to Stephanie's desire to be different from everyone else? Most of the time, I was happy to melt into the crowd, but I completely get her desire to stand out. It's an important lesson for our kiddos that they should want to be different. I think that we could also use this book as a jumping off point to teach our kids about leadership.

5. Something Good
We haven't read this one as many times, but I love how it ends. In this book your little reader will learn that they are important and worth something to their parents.

It's really hard to choose just five books, I could have easily chosen ten! Close competitors for spot #5 were Put Me in the Book, Mud Puddle, Purple Green and Yellow and Look at Me.

Are you Looking for a New Medium for your Art Period?

Let's face it, most of us who have to teach our own art outcomes tend to stick with the same safe materials: Construction Paper, maybe some fancy paper, glue, crayons and markers.
I do.
Sure, we have a few other supplies in our overstuffed supply cupboards, plus we HORDE awesome things we find, but be honest, we stick with the easy classics.
Right?
Ok, some of you are better art teachers than me, but maybe you can find a new idea or two below.

LET'S CHANGE THAT!
There are literally thousands ideas for supplies you can use for art projects. AND Thousands of projects you can do. So for this article, let's look at some supplies we can use for Self Portraits.
Every Kid likes making pictures of themselves!
Or if you prefer you can have the students use these SAME ideas for portraits of a partner, family member or the subject of a study in another subject (such as an historical figure)

7 Ways to Create Self Portraits
(this list is by NO means complete please comment below with additional ideas!)

1. Cereal Portraits
Isn't this an ingenious way to create multi-cultural portraits? Use regular, multi-grain and chocolate Cheerios for skin and hair tones. You could even add Fruit Loops as clothing and accessories if you wanted to Jazz them up!
2. Wire Portraits
This is SO cool. I could Never do this with firsties. The teacher I linked to that I found this idea from did it with 8th grade, so keep that in mind when considering this AWESOME project. Perhaps an older elementary class could do something similar with an easier non-person subject?

3. Photography Half-Portraits
I've seen a version of this project before (and have even done it while student teaching), where we take magazine pictures and have the students draw the other half of the celebrity/models face, What makes this AWESOME is that the student artists attempt to create the other half of their OWN faces. They could make their faces using coloured pencils/pencil crayons as in this sample, or you could use crayons, markers, paint, pastels, really whatever you like!

4. Magazine Portraits
Speaking of Magazines, this one reminds me of a scene in the Truman show where Jim Carrey's character is ripping pictures of models out of magazines in an attempt to recreate the face of the girl he fell in love with. This is a slightly less creepy version. Students glue facial features to a representation of their heads.

5. Clay Portraits
These Clay Self Portraits are a great hands on arts activity! Students look at themselves in a mirror, and then apply bits of clay and sculpt them to resemble themselves! Mr. Gianetto had them use ONLY balls and coils of clay to create these faces. Don't they look awesome?

6. Word Portraits
Pinterest has so many different ways of using this idea, so take your time combing through its links to find the one you like best. I like this simple one which can be linked to your creative writing curriculum. Students fill these very simple faces with words of things they like, or things about them. Everyone's heads will turn out differently!
7. Loose Objects
Do you have a TON of random supplies in your craft closet? Not enough to give each student the same thing? THIS project is perfect for that Smorgasbord of supplies just taking up space!
One of Our Self Portraits (originally published 2011)
Last week I wanted to do something really different for art class, so I went to the dollar store with Mrs. L (the teacher across the hall), and bought mini art boards and pastels. I had a small budget left for supplies, and wanted to do something they could keep or gift to their parents.

I got my kiddies to use a pencil first to draw themselves on the canvas before colouring them in. This was REALLY important since there were no spare canvas.

Take a peek!
One of my boys hard at work:

My sample and the supplies:
I NEVER make an art project without doing it too, either with them, or as a sample first. In this case, I made my sample with them so they could see my pencil drawing first.

This might be one of my favourite units!
I LOVE to do activities with plants, and truth be told, that is actually the easiest part of this unit, but let's not forget about the animals part of this outcome.

What animal do you end up focusing on?
Butterflies? Chicks? Mealworms?
I usually focus on Butterflies.

But I still make sure my students ALWAYS get exposure to animals from across the animal kingdom. We like to talk about biomes. It's an excellent way to talk about animal adaptations and how the animals who like in these biomes are perfectly suited for each and why they wouldn't necessarily do well in another.

How do you extend science into art?
Every year we each pick our favourite animal from each biome we studied. Then we pick JUST one of those animals each and create a mask so we can dress up as it and give a presentation about it's adaptations.

It's a hit!

I think they're very creative!

We had two panthers, three lions, a butterfly, a toucan, an octopus, a chameleon, a cat and a zebra, as well a few that seemed to be called a different animal than planned each time you asked after it was finished.

Personally, I love that Zebra the best.

These are the MASKS I use.

HOW to make these
1. Have students settle on an animal to create and study.
2. Colour/color the masks to match the chosen animals.
3. Glue into shape.
4. Put out and distribute in your favourite method feathers, sparkles and more for student use.
5. Tie on ribbon or yarn
6. Tada!

What do you think?
Would you make animal masks for this unit?

I'm CONSTANTLY changing what I do, every year. I know there are not enough hours in the day to do it justice when I ALSO have to focus on Language Arts and Math.

Incorporating Science into Language Arts

This is not a new idea. We will all be doing it for the rest of our careers.

How?

I like to READ books that touch on or are connected to my outcomes to my class as part of a language arts lesson.

This morning I read to the class the story "Too Much Noise".

Do you know this one? It's about an old man Peter who decided his house was making too much noise, so he went to a wise man for advice. The wise man suggests one animal after another for Peter to bring home. All this means that with each page turn his house is getting noisier instead of more quiet. In the end, the wise man says to get rid of the animals, so Peter obediently does. As a result, Peter is pleased to notice how quiet his house really is.

Where's the Science?
Like me, have your students list all the animals, and do their best to ID the sounds made by each animal.
In our class version, my class had ME complaining to our Principal that my classroom was too noisy.

(Some of You shared your ideas for teaching Cursive as part of your survey results!)

On March 5th I posted a Survey asking what other teachers thought about cursive writing. I received an OVERWHELMING response from you.
I was expecting maybe 25 or 50 responses, but I received WELL over the 100 responses you can access as part of your free membership to surveymonkey.

SO the results I will be sharing with you represent ONLY those first 100 responses. So I'm sorry if you do not see your responses shared.

This final post in the series Shares the ways you find time to teach cursive in your day.

Here's a sampling of the responses from where you were asked to provide more information:

15 Old and New Ways to Teach Cursive

1. We give it as homework and teach it the first two weeks.

2. We require every student to hand in work with their name written in cursive. I expect my kids to hand in name and date in cursive. The goal is to help them develop a signature.

3. We have a program called ABC boom that helps with printing and can be used to teach kindergarten students cursive.

4. The librarian teaches it to 4th grade

5. I record our assignments on the assignment board in cursive so they have practice reading it.

6. We have begun practicing it as daily work, mostly for early finishers.

7. One 5\6 teacher created video lessons through Google classroom for students to watch at their own pace.

8. We use it as a motivator. If your printing is legible, spacing is correct, letter size and formation are adequate ......we teach the class your name.

9. Sometimes if my class has worked really hard, I do teach it at the very end of the year but if we still aren't at grade level, I don't.

10. I teach third and one of my literacy centers is cursive. I don't teach it, but they do practice a letter a week.

11. I use Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, which I was trained in. My student's writing is beautiful! Even the worst printers, have beautiful cursive.

12. I teach 4th -6th grade and at the beginning of the year, I review the cursive alphabet as their morning warm up, one lower and one uppercase letter a day.

13. The rest of the year, the morning writing prompt is in cursive and they must respond in cursive.

14. They also must practice spelling words in cursive as one activity.

15. I have the cursive alphabet up in the room and require some things to be written in cursive.

To summarize:
Teachers Find a LOT of ways to incorporate cursive writing if they want or need to teach it.

Here's a sampling of the responses from where you were asked to provide more information:

14 Reasons Teachers LOVE Cursive Writing (or why they do)

1. To help them develop a signature.

2. I decided to teach it because no other grade was teaching it.

3. There are a few teachers who highly value it, therefore make time to teach it.

4. Enough people still use it that it will be helpful for kids to be able to read it.

5. Research has shared that teaching cursive can help students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other disabilities.

6. I find that for those students that have horrible print writing in cursive makes their writing more legible.

7. I feel that it is important to teach cursive, not necessarily so they can write in cursive, but so they can read it. Most of the important documents from our nations found, as well as historical documents around the world, were written in cursive. I think that if our students get through their basic education and find themselves unable to read the Bill of Rights in its original format, we've done them a disservice.

8. I encounter more and more adults with poor handwriting now than I have ever seen before. Good penmanship is a skill that is vital to our students when they begin applying for jobs.

9. Our school strives to provide opportunities that are not given at other schools. Cursive writing is one of those opportunities.

10. We use it as a motivator. If your printing is legible, spacing is correct, letter size and formation are adequate ......we teach the class your name.

11. The OT in my building encourages us to teach cursive for fine motor development.

12. Cursive was just mandated in my district because high school teachers were complaining that their students could not read it or write fast enough notes.

13. Here's what I tell my students: *It's a lost art *How are you going to sign a check, mortgage papers, or any other legal document if you're never taught? *How are you going to read documents like the Constitution? Or a letter from Grandmother?

14. I think cursive is a lifesaver for kids with fine motor skill issues. They struggle less because they don't have to lift their pencil as much. Most of.my kids with sloppy print have beautiful cursive and it is a huge confidence builder.

I think the PRO Cursive Writing Camp Wins this debate!
Part One: Why Teachers Hate Cursive
Part Three: Old and New Ways to Teach Cursive

On March 5th I posted a Survey asking what other teachers thought about cursive writing. I received an OVERWHELMING response from you.
I was expecting maybe 25 or 50 responses, but I received WELL over the 100 responses you can access as part of your free membership to surveymonkey.

SO the results I will be sharing with you represent ONLY those first 100 responses. So I'm sorry if you do you see your responses shared.

This series of posts starts will the reasons you gave me for why you don't like cursive or don't feel it needs to be taught in our schools.

Here are the results of the first TWO questions
31% of respondents did not teach Cursive

More importantly, 19% Did not believe that we should be teaching Cursive

So, why didn't those 19/100 teachers not think we should be teaching cursive?
Here's a sampling of their responses from where they were asked to give more information:

5 Reasons Teachers Hate Cursive Writing (or why they don't)

1. I myself do not use it.

2. a) I honestly feel like technology has helped make cursive writing a somewhat useless skill.
b) Typing skills and computer literacy have taken over the time we use to teach cursive. As it should.

3. As soon as my students can enter fourth grade reading in grade level or the government decides that testing isn't tied to my pay/ evaluation then I will teach cursive.

4. The whole world is in print now with the computer.

5. It's irrelevant!

Take a minute and really think about it.
Did you have to think about it?
No. I didn't.

For some of us, the topic is complicated. Like me.
I like. No LOVE getting hugs from close family and friends like my husband and daughter.

People I know less who hug you on first greeting?
Not so much. It makes my introvert self crawl deeper into her shell.

Hugs given unconditionally by my child or another are the best kind!
If my daughter feels the need to throw her arms around my neck or waist and hold me tight, I wrap my arms around her and hold on until she is ready to let go.

Do you Hug your students?

For most of us, hugging our students is a complicated question. So many of us teach or taught students who are given little to no affection at home, and come to school silently begging for the love they desperately need. I have taught MANY whose smiles light up the room when you show them the love they need.

But hugging?
We were all taught in teachers college or our university programs that we cannot hug our students because it is not right. We wouldn't want to be accused of wrongdoing.

What about the Students who hug us?

Are you like me and desperately want to hug them back when they desperately want to hug you?
What can you do?

I say, "Thank you, I LOVE hugs,"and then I pat their head or back so they get the physical touch they crave, without me overstepping the teacher-student boundary.

Are there times we can hug back?

Probably on a case by case basis. Or maybe your school isn't as strict.

Situations I feel are okay to take the risk?
Was their a death in the family?
That's about it.

But like I said, on a case by case basis.

Are Hugs a Secret Ingredient?
Of course they are! Who doesn't feel better when someone gives you a hug when they can see you're feeling down? I know I do! My hubby is away for work most of the time, and so our daughter can see that I get a little sad, and she gives me hugs and I SWEAR I can feel her love pouring into me. And at bedtime when she misses her daddy the most and gets weepy, I give her the longest hug she needs and she feels a little better and ready for her bedtime stories.

What makes this book awesome?
This Canadian classic, published about 40 years ago, is TIMELESS. Who among us hasn't felt left out, or that our needs weren't being met? Who hasn't felt bullied? Sad? Depressed? Friendless?

In Hug Me, Elliot is a lonely Porcupine. All the other porcupines are perfectly happy to keep others at a distance and avoid physical contact. But not Elliot. There's one thing in the world he wants more than anything else to experience, and that is a HUG. But none of the animals he asks are willing to hug him. You can see how sad he is, and feel his desperation when he dresses up as two things others love to try and convince them to hug him. Eventually he gives up and goes to the woods to be alone, but that is when and where everything changes for him.

Who should read this book?
This book is not for emergent readers to read on their own, but like my own preschooler, it has an engaging story with a wonderful message that they can enjoy when read to them. This would be perfect for first and second graders reading at grade level. The pattern of the story is perfect for practice in guided reading because it has some very clear parts, which makes it perfect for summarizing the story when retelling.

I use the Shape Go Map below for retelling. Do you?
The kids can see the image as a visual reminder of what the need to tell the teacher when retelling. The triangle in Who, when, where. Some stories only have a who.
The rectangle is the four major things that happen in the story. This is why HUG ME is perfect for Guided Reading practice or extra help, because the events in the story are so distinct.

From my guided reading table two years ago

Who else should read this book?
It is perfect as part of an anti-bullying lesson plan, especially in the early years as they can really put their feet in Elliots shoes, so to speak.
I find talking about bullying issues and character education can be helped by using books where the protagonist is nonhuman.

My daughter has also adorably reviewed this book for you.

Wait until you see her adorable conclusion to the story.
Check out her second review video below.

How can I use this book to teach?
This book is awesome as mentioned above for character education and bullying lesson plans.
I have a few ideas you can use without much prep:
First: Discuss how Elliot was feeling throughout the story.
Second: Think of a time you felt how Elliot was feeling and what made you feel better.
Third: What can you do to help someone who is sad?
Fourth: Make a card for someone who could use some cheering up, or some elderly folks at a nursing home, or somewhere else you feel the class could cheer people up.
ACTIVITY: Talk about FREE Hug day, and how we could hug other students. Is there a hugging project we could design?

Game: Hug Tag! When someone gets tagged by it, you have to hug them to get them unfrozen!
And of course you should have a talk about how it's OK to not hug someone and ask/offer a high five instead. Our students own their bodies!
There is an overwhelming number of videos for this first grade concept on Youtube. I love the visual of the two boys saving for a bike, and one wasting his money on junk and the other being able to afford the bike when summer finally comes around again.

My daughter has her own debit card and knows she can buy whatever she wants with her money, but if it's something expensive, then she needs to save. Saving is hard when you're only 5, but I'm sure she'll catch on soon, She would REALLY like an American Doll. And it is too much for Mommy and Daddy to afford.

She always wants to buy candy or dresses for her dolls, but if she WANTS to buy an American Doll, then she NEEDS to save and stop spending he allowance on silly things that clutter her room.

Take a minute and really think about it.
Did you have to think about it?
No. I didn't.
I've known my favourite colour was pink since I was a little girl.
Sure, I played with the idea of Jade as my favourite colour for a year or two in junior high, but I ALWAYS come back to pink.

It's my first love. For colour, that is.

For my daughter, she's known since she was three that her favourite colour is purple. I think it's because of my mother, her grandma also prefers purple. We'll see if purple is still her favourite when she starts school in September. If she's anything like me, she'll stubbornly hold onto her colour for a long time.
A Library of Choices

Colours are like books in the library, there is one for every reader.
Every week I take my daughter to the library, Every week we come back with a huge assortment of books in a variety of genres. Some are new to us both, some I remember reading.

I'm always pleased when she picks a book I remember from my childhood.

This week one of her Selections was RED IS BEST by Kathy Stinson.

What makes this book awesome?
The child in the story, Kelly, is like all of us. She knows her own mind, and is stubborn in her preferences, trying very hard to win the argument with her mother over what colour items she should be wearing. Looking at the illustrations, it's clear the only argument her mother wins is the one over her jacket, possibly because it's winter and you must be warm, lol. She may have also won the socks argument, but none of the other five. Kelly likes red best, and will use and wear red as much as she possibly can.

Who should read this book?
This book has a very predictive text. Each of the Seven things Kelly prefers to be red have four sentences. With this pattern, emergent readers can figure out the text with ease. My preschooler was chiming in on the repeated sentence "I like my red _______ the best" by the end of the book. On our second read through the next night she was predicting the entire book. A week later she could "read" it on her own.

She also has dreams of being a YouTube star, as most kids her age these days.
She constantly takes my cell phone and makes videos of herself changing her "babies" clothes, lol.
Since she was getting upset that I wouldn't post any of those videos for her, we talked about it, and I agreed we would work together to make videos. so now she will be reviewing kids books for me!

Check out her first video below.

How can I use this book to teach?
This book is awesome for opinion writing.
First have your child/students discuss Kellys love for all things red.
Second list all the colours you can think of.
Third have them each decide what is their very favourite colour.
Fourth have each child write sentences about that colour being best using the same format as the book.

Youtube Video of the week #2

Do you like Cool Science Tricks?

Of course you do! It's one of the best parts of being a teacher, parent or both.

Do I?

Of course I do, I found you this video, didn't I?

Check out this video from brusspup for some awesome water science!

Here's an AWESOME video of TEN science experiments you can do with your kids. Some will fit in perfectly with things you are studying this year in science, while others will just be a cool diversion at the end of the day.

How is this useful to you?

Maybe you could reward your class with being able to try out a few of these at the end of the week?

How cool is the dancing liquid? (Didn't I see that an old episode of Big Bang Theory?)

What about taking a poll to see how many pencils your students think you can push through the bag before it springs a major leak?

I want to try that with my daughter this weekend! Better get sharpening, we tend to only have one sharpened pencil at a time, unless I use some coloured pencils instead....

Or maybe we'll try the coloured hot and water barrier. I;ve never seen that before, that's kinda neat!

Which will be the first one you try?

Mrs Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712076899018061168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4822582432299317883.post-81425739335120989222017-03-09T09:00:00.000-07:002017-03-09T11:54:26.409-07:00How to Cheat at Bookmarks and Get away with it!These are totally a CHEAT, and I promise your kids will let you get away with it.

Do you need a craft for this Friday?
Are you short on cash and just need something FREE?

Try these beautiful bookmarks!

I think next year I'll adjust the plan so that the back has rules for "just right reading" on them to encourage my students to challenge themselves. I'll also make sure I have enough packing tape! these would have turned out much nicer if I did.

This was based on a craft in Crafts for all Seasons by Kathy Ross

What you need:
Construction Paper cut to your preferred size (we did ours pretty wide, but I will suggest not as wide next time)
Last Month's extra Scholastic Book Orders
Scissors
Glue
Packing Tape or Press and Seal Laminate

Here's how we did it:

I wrote their names on green construction paper and handed them out. Depending on when in the year you do this project and the age of your kids, you will probably let them print their own names.

Then, the students went through extra copies of the book orders to find pictures of books they wanted to read or have read to glue to the bookmarks. We first talked about how we should carefully go through the book orders and take our time so we only cut out the books we will want to glue to your bookmarks.

After they were glued together I taped (first with packing tape and then unfortunately with scotch tape) to seal so they would hopefully last the rest of the school year. A very successful art lesson.
