Math Villian!

I'll admit I stole this from someone online, and if it's yours, I'll give due credit!

edit March 28th: maybe stolen from here.

In my class, a few days a week, our "Villain" steals a few numbers from our 100 chart and my students need to tell me which numbers and tell me how they know it's that number.

The villain is a random picture I printed from Google images, so sorry, I can't provide it to you!

Chinese New Year 2014:Year of the Horse

We didn't do much in my class this year since it was the same week as report cards and parent teacher interviews, but here's a peek at a few of our projects.

We made Cherry Blossoms. I know, technically they represent Japan more, but I fell in love with this craft.

We made this LONG Chinese dragon chain using red, black and snake paper.

Hanging off the same yarn in our room we also hung these TPT inspired Lanterns and wrote happy new year in Chinese on them. I'm glad you can't hear my pronunciation!

Valentine's Day 2014

I REALLY didn't want to take the time to change my classroom door for just two weeks, so I changed up my Hot Chocolate Mug and covered my Superhero boy with a pair of hearts. What do you think of my adaptation?

For a Valentine's Day craft on Tuesday we made these Valentine Men to bring home. Super easy, and cute to boot! It's one sheet of red cut into four strips for arms and legs, one purple, half a pink, half a black and half a red. But that's just the colours I had in my room, personalize yours!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Overdue Classroom Management post

I'll be honest, I am still trying desperately to figure out what will work for a couple of my students, but for the most part. the following plan is working with the majority of my class.

1. Since September I have been using a Super cute Superhero clip-chart, but I don't think I'm utilizing as well as I can. It seems mostly to be used just as incentive for helping out in the classroom, not just to reinforce good behaviour. I'm hoping I can make better use of it as the third quarter continues.

2. Meet our "Stuffy" collection. The stuffies decide which desk they'll sit at based on general rule following. Even my most difficult to manage students seem to want them, as they have been caught taking from other students desks a few times.

3. Similar to the warm fuzzies I've seen in other teachers classrooms, my students are collecting 10 points from compliments we receive from other staff and visiting adults. Once we've received 10 points on our POW board we receive a full class reward, such as a pajama party, popcorn party, dance party, etc.

4. We have a daily Mystery Hero. If the mystery hero is observed following the rules and generally not being a bully, they win the class a prize, sometimes gummy bears, sometimes something fun to do.  They also get their name on the back of our door. If they do not win the prize, their name is not revealed so to not embarrass them.

Reading Powers #2

Yesterday I shared my first product to go with my new teaching obsession: Reading Power.

Today I offer to share with you my newest forever freebie.

These two alternate versions show the same concept, that reading is not just decoding books, it is the act of thinking about the books.  I will display it in my classroom to serve as a constant reminder to my students that we ALL need to ALWAYS think about the words when we read them to gain comprehension.

Enjoy!

EDIT- this is now located in our exclusive FREEBIE vault. To get access, subscribe to our email list.

Reading Powers #1

I haven't forgotten all my lovely followers!

This week I attended a workshop led by the lovely Adrienne Gear all about the Reading Power program (but don't call it a a program!).

Have you heard of it before?

I'm not going to give you a huge speech about it, but basically the reason so many students struggle with comprehension is that we don't actively teach them how to THINK while they are reading. Sure, we ask questions before and after, but we have to model these skills OFTEN for our students to learn how to do it for themselves.

The five primary skills our kids need to learn:
Connect
Question
Visualize
Infer
Transform

I have JUST created and uploaded a set of Reading Power posters to use in your introductory lesson and to refer through all year using a super hero theme. Here's the girl example. Check out TPT for the boy and the brain pieces.
EDIT- These posters are now available in the FREEBIE Vault which you are sent the link to when you subscribe to our email list

Enjoy!
